STR smart lock checklist before guest check-in

A practical pre-arrival checklist for lock codes, batteries, app access, Wi-Fi, and fallback entry.

Pre-arrival check
  1. 01 Guest code tested at the door.
  2. 02 Battery level checked.
  3. 03 Remote lock status confirmed.
  4. 04 Wi-Fi checked near entry.
  5. 05 Fallback access verified.

A smart lock can look ready and still create friction at check-in.

Most preventable lock issues come from small setup gaps: weak batteries, stale codes, missing admin access, Wi-Fi problems, or no fallback entry plan.

Why smart locks fail at the worst time

Guest access depends on more than the deadbolt turning. The keypad, app, battery, Wi-Fi connection, code schedule, and account ownership all have to line up before arrival.

What to check before a guest arrives

  • check_circle Confirm the active guest code works at the keypad.
  • check_circle Check battery level inside the lock app.
  • check_circle Verify the lock still reports status remotely.
  • check_circle Confirm the property Wi-Fi is online near the entry.
  • check_circle Test physical key or backup access.
  • check_circle Make sure the manager or owner has admin control.

When the lock needs reconfiguration

If codes do not sync, the app shows the wrong status, admin access is unclear, or the lock is tied to an old owner account, the property needs more than a quick battery swap.

When to book an onsite audit

Book the audit when lock issues overlap with Wi-Fi, thermostat, camera, or account-access problems. The value is the full property baseline, not just one lock check.
