Connected devices can create buyer confusion after a clean-looking sale.

A device may work during showings but still be tied to the seller, installer, property manager, or an old account.

Document devices before the listing goes live

The goal is not to turn the agent into tech support. The goal is to know what exists, who controls it, and what may need reset or buyer attention.

Systems to include

  • check_circle Smart locks and keypads.
  • check_circle Video doorbells and exterior cameras.
  • check_circle Smart thermostats.
  • check_circle Garage access and entry controls.
  • check_circle Wi-Fi equipment and mesh nodes.
  • check_circle Apps, hubs, and admin accounts.

Working device vs. transferable device

A camera can record, a thermostat can change temperature, and a lock can open while still being controlled by someone who will leave the property. Transfer readiness is a separate check.

What to hand off

The cleanest handoff is a short device list with status notes, ownership concerns, unsupported items, and next steps for reset, replacement, or post-close setup.

Quick checklist.

Device type and location recorded.

Current controller or app owner identified.

Reset or transfer concerns noted.

Unsupported devices marked.

Buyer-facing questions surfaced early.
